"Devastating Beauty" Autumn / Winter 2010 collection

Devastation and beauty are a complete paradox of words, especially when conjoined in this season's aptly named collection "Devastating Beauty" from Shanghai Tang, the global ambassador of contemporary Chinese chic. As China develops at lightning speed, the World watches with bated breath to see how the urbanization of ...its lush sprawling land will integrate thousands of years of heritage and cultural beauty into the "new" China or whether it will simply be erased in lieu of sheer commercialism... Always one to see with unique perspective, Shanghai Tang looked beyond the surface of the immense construction and development to find splendor and inspiration from the perceived devastation and translated this into a poignant foundation for its latest collection.

The campaign itself took place in Shanghai, a city that has emerged in recent years as China's global centre of style, culture, trade and architecture. The most urbanized of cities in the fastest growing of super-powers, the images depict the day in the life of two successful, effervescent Chinese professionals. Streetscapes, the bright neon lights of the city skyline and functioning chaos of Shanghai set the perfect backdrop for the contemporary designs of the Autumn / Winter 2010 collection... Bustling it may be but behind the concrete jungle beats the heart of a beautiful city, exhilarating, unique and full of surprises; Shanghai Tang befits such a destination, itself a brand that sets new benchmarks and that draws no comparison... China's development is unstoppable so rather than oppose it, be open to the "Devastating Beauty" that can emerge.
